Hedavi: the perfect getaway!

About Hedavi, Guhagar, Ratnagiri

Hedavi beach Maharashtra
The rocky beach of Hedavi

The rather charming hamlet of Hedavi is one of many to habitat around the coast of western Maharashtra in the region of Kokan. The village is populated by approximately 2000 inhabitants. It is remotely located in the taluka of Guhagar, district Ratnagiri in the state of Maharashtra, India.

The village has a primary healthcare centre and a school that educates the local children up to class X. Other establishments include the local panchayat, the police-patil, a post office and the Bank of Maharashtra which serves much of the banking needs. The village does have electricity but much of the water supply is sourced by wells. Phone connectivity is predominantly dependent on the BSNL network. In some ways, the village of Hedavi is rather untouched, unscathed and not yet corrupted by tall high-rise flats and apartment blocks. It is common to see huts and houses with roof tiles in what the British think of as 'bungalows'.

The village survives as a mixed economy largely driven by agricultural produce. It is perhaps obvious that this alone tends not to be a sufficient source of income for most. Given this, the natives will often have additional sources of work and income streams. Like a lot of the local villages, Hedavi too has several communities dating to the culture and ethos of generations gone by.

The village has a lot to offer and is famous for -
  • The Dashabhuja Laxmi Ganesh Temple
  • The Uma Maheshwari Temple
  • The Navlai Devi Temple
  • The Laxmi Narayan Temple
  • Various Palkhi festivals across the year
  • Bahman Gal and Hedavi's rocky beach
  • Waterfalls during monsoon season
A perfect tourist base - Not many appreciate the strategic location of Hedavi. It is flanked on one side by the beaches of Guhagar and Velneshwar. It is close to commuting to places like Lote Parshuram. Furthermore, a ferry ride from nearby Taswal takes one across the creek to Jaigadh Fort and from there, one is only an hour away from Ganpati Pule. Several-day trips are thus possible with ease from Hedavi. Unlike nearby destinations, Hedavi is not busy, you can expect complete peace and tranquillity compared to the more famous towns mentioned herein.

Ganpatipule is a town on the Konkan Coast of western India. It’s known for its beaches, such as Ganpatipule Beach and nearby Aare Ware Beach. On Ganpatipule Beach, the centuries-old Swayambhu Ganpati Temple is a pilgrimage site and houses a large orange statue of Ganesh. Prachin Konkan is an open-air museum with models depicting traditional Konkan life. On the way to or back from Ganpati Pule, a stopover at the Malgund beach is also worthwhile.

Workcations! For all of the reasons highlighted here, Hedavi can be an ideal place to work and vacation at the same time. Perhaps you are looking for solitude to complete writing your book or finish drafting your business plans. The quiet, peaceful surroundings can be a place of retreat for anyone seeking to be mindful and rejuvenate by nurturing their mind and body.

A lot more could be on offer - with the right initiative and mindset backed by appropriate investments, Hedavi could become the perfect getaway for all. Kids can be exposed to traditional skills such as harvesting fruits, appreciating nature closely, and learning to go green by learning to make the most of different parts of the coconut or supari trees (from making brooms, and rooftops to single-use dinnerware - a lot can be derived from these plants). Adults can have a breakaway from the urban hustle and bustle, and role model survival skills to kids as it is likely one will encounter electricity outages, lack of network connectivity, rugged terrain, and more.

Hedavi thus is not your place to go if you desire to go to yet another busy resort. But it is absolutely the place to visit when you choose to have a relaxing break away from the mechanical routines of urban life.
